ABOUT ANGELA

Since growing up as a small child in Australia, Angela has always had a strong and passionate connection with Nature and the worlds of Spirit. This was quite overwhelming until 17 years ago when she spontaneously began shamanic journeying, and was called by Spirit and initiatory experiences to the shamanic path. Over time, that which she perceived as a burden revealed itself as a gift. Angela has strengthened these gifts through a combination of practice and extensive training. Her teachers include Laureen Rama, Betsy Bergstrom, Christine Wallace, and nagual, dona Bernadette Vigil, author of "The Mastery of Awareness", and longtime associate of don Miguel Ruiz who authored "The Four Agreements." Her training in Core Shamanism is from the Foundation of Shamanic Studies.

Along with her studies in psychology, Angela has received practical and theoretical counselling training through Vancouver Community College and The Satir Institute of the Pacific. After working as a counsellor for over a decade treating issues related to substance abuse and trauma, Angela completed training in Self-Regulation Therapy with the Canadian Foundation for Trauma Research and Education. She specializes in healing trauma by synthesizing shamanic healing methods and SRT to bring about true holistic healing for both the physical body and the soul. Her commitment to the integration of creativity and spirituality in these areas infuses her work with a unique energy.

Angela is the co-owner of HeartQuest Holistic Wellness Centre on Commercial Drive, Vancouver. Here she has a private practice and teaches a variety of courses on shamanism, ranging from introductory to 3-year apprenticeships in the White Bone Tradition, a tradition based in Core Shamanic techniques and interwoven with her Irish and Scottish ancestral practices. Angela is a celebrated Vancouver artist, Reiki Master (Usui and SSR) and workshop facilitator. She is a Reverend Shaman ordained by the Sacred Circle of the Great Mystery, and a member of the Society of Shamanic Practitioners.

"When I first came to see Angela, I had suffered for years from chronic fatigue, lack of energy, clarity, an overwhelming feeling of a fractured self and soul, leaving me vulnerable and barely surviving. After having soul retrieval and learning shamanic techniques, all aspects of healing have blossomed into a consciousness of well being, peace and joy. My ability to create the life intended for me has resurfaced with clarity and gratitude. I am connected to my spirit and higher self. My world has changed and I am free and feel cherished. I am convinced that I would have continued spiraling downward if not for Angela, her gifts, wisdom and support." Marishka

ABOUT SHAMANISM
It's In Your Ancestry

It appears that shamanism has been a path of spiritual expression on all inhabited continents of the earth for at least 40,000 years and yet remarkably is still being practiced today. Today, shamanism is re-emerging in contemporary western culture as a path to self-discovery and spiritual connection. Just as we express our Selves mentally, emotionally, and physically, shamanism has been the way that people all over the world have expressed their spirit. It seems to be in the roots of almost every culture and so all of our ancestors were practicing these methods of expression at some time.

THE PRACTICE

Shamanism can involve expression through:

  • Art (visual, music, dance)
  • Ritual and ceremony
  • Daily prayer and meditation
  • Celebration of life events and rites of passage

Just as we have those in our contemporary cultures who have innate strengths intellectually or physically, people in shamanic cultures may have innate spiritual strengths. These can be expressed through:

  • Divination - methods of ascertaining information from other realities
  • Healing - working with the spiritual side of illness
  • Psychopomp - helping those who are transitioning into or out of this reality in birth and death
  • Art - the creation of shamanic tools such as musical instruments, tools or regalia
  • Ceremony making - facilitating important ritual and festivity to mark specific occasions.

The fascinating thing about shamanism is that although it has been practiced on all inhabited continents of the earth with people living oceans apart, many of the stories, techniques, methods, and experiences are just the same. After thousands of years, some universal practices still being used include the use of: monotonous percussion to reach altered states, smoke from a variety of plants to clear and cleanse energies, and medicinal herbs to treat illness.

SHAMANISM'S WORLDVIEW

  • Everything is alive
  • Everything has a soul
  • Everything is connected and interdependent

Are feeling a loss and disconnection to your spirit,
your community, your ancestors, or the Earth?

Know this.

Your spirit, your community, your ancestors, and the Earth
are also feeling a loss and disconnection from You.

CORE SHAMANISM

Core shamanism is a trans-cultural form of shamanism that combines healing and problem-solving techniques from around the world. Because Core Shamanism does  not have a specific cultural perspective, it frees you up to re-member and explore lost spiritual roots, discover a new spiritual path, or enhance a spiritual or religious practice you may already have.

WHAT IS A SHAMAN?

The word shaman (pronounces sha-mahn) comes from the Tungus tribe in Siberia and translates to "the master of the fire." In many cultures the elements represent our being (e.g. earth=body, water=blood, air=breath) and fire often represents our spirit. So, a shaman could be seen as a master of the Spirit.

The basis of shamanism is the understanding that parallel realities co-exist along with our own, something that quantum physicists and science have also agreed upon. These places are sometimes known as the Spirit World, Non-ordinary Reality, Heaven, the Collective Unconscious, imagination, or Dreamtime. A Shaman is a mediator and uses discipline and intention, travelling to and from other realities to bring information and healing for the good of other individuals, communities, places, and the Earth.

SELF-REGULATION THERAPY (SRT)

SRT is a mind-body approach to help you resolve and clear excess energy and feelings that may remain in your nervous system causing dysregulation. Although every individual's experience of trauma is different here are a few circumstances that are usually overwhelming:

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Medical and dental procedures
  • Abandonment, shaming, bullying or abuse of any kind
  • Natural disasters
  • Falls and accidents
  • Sudden loss

WHAT IS DYSREGULATION?

Everyone's nervous system is designed to regulate from a state of relaxed alertness to high activation should we become threatened or overwhelmed. During a state of activation we are automatically driven by survival and our fight or flight instincts take over. Just like animals, this instinctive state produces large amounts of energy ensuring that we have enough to get through and survive. In fact, so much energy is produced that there is often excess. Under ideal circumstances the excess energy leaves our systems in several ways, including trembling, heat, or tingling as we regulate back to a balanced state. Should ideal circumstances not be present however, the excess energy may remain trapped in our nervous system causing dysregulation and difficulty getting through life's challenges with confidence or flexibility.

SYMPTOMS OF DYSREGULATION

Feelings of separation or a loss of faith or connection to Spirit

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Difficulty modulating emotions

Alcohol or drug misuse

Anxiety and depression

Sleep difficulties

Migraines

Ear ringing, or sensitivity to sound or light

Neck, back or jaw pain

Chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases

Gastrointestinal problems

Difficulty with concentration or memory

RESULTS OF SRT

During sessions you may experience trembling, heat, tingling, tears or laughter as your system releases excess activation in a safe and contained environment. After sessions you will likely experience feelings of hope and well-being. Because SRT helps return your nervous system to a state of balance, you will also notice an increase in your ability to experience joy and feelings of aliveness, increasing your capacity to copy with life stress.
